A mental health first aid lanyard can make an agreed support role easier to identify and provide a place for a staff ID card. Choose clear wording, a suitable release mechanism and a fitting that works with your ID holder.

The lanyard identifies the role; it does not award it. Buying one does not demonstrate training or competence. Use “Mental Health First Aider” wording only when it accurately describes the wearer’s training and agreed responsibilities.

What makes a useful mental health first aid lanyard?

Look beyond the colour. The words, fittings and way it sits on the wearer matter more than an eye-catching product photograph.

FeatureWhat to check
Role wordingUse an accurate, readable title. “Mental Health Matters” promotes awareness; it does not identify a particular trained role.
Breakaway fittingLook for a release point in the strap. Check whether the design and number of release points meet your workplace’s equipment requirements.
Length and widthCheck the stated dimensions and whether “length” means the full strap or its drop when worn. Make sure the ID will sit where you need it.
Clip and card holderCheck the clip type and the holder’s internal dimensions. Confirm whether the holder is included and whether it takes a portrait or landscape card.
Material and careCheck the supplier’s material and cleaning information. Inspect the strap, stitching, clip and release fitting before use.

A breakaway fitting is a designed release point, not a guarantee that a lanyard is suitable for every task. Follow your workplace’s assessment of whether neck-worn identification is appropriate; a clipped ID holder or badge may be preferable in some roles.

PAC Supplies Mental Health First Aider lanyard

PAC Supplies: Mental Health First Aider lanyard

PAC lists a 15 mm-wide lanyard with a safety breakaway, under model PAC-MHL. It is a role-labelled option to compare with awareness-only designs.

Check before buying: ask about the full strap length, clip and any included ID holder if those details are important to your order; the brief product description does not specify them.

Jax First Aid Mental Health First Aider lanyard

Jax First Aid: Mental Health First Aider lanyard

Jax describes a pre-printed lanyard with a breakaway feature and a metal hook attachment for an ID card or pass wallet. The listed length is 850 mm.

Check before buying: confirm how that length is measured and check your holder’s attachment slot. The product name alone does not confirm that a card holder is included.

First-aider identification or mental health awareness?

These messages are useful for different reasons. A role-labelled lanyard tells colleagues who to approach under your workplace’s support arrangements. A general mental health awareness design shows support for the cause.

For an awareness campaign, the Mental Health Foundation’s green ribbon campaign offers a clear example. Wearing its symbol does not establish that someone is a trained mental health first aider.

Avoid relying on colour alone. Use readable wording and explain the role to staff. If you prefer compact identification on clothing, see our mental health first aid badge guide.

Ordering lanyards for a team

  1. Confirm who needs one. Match the order to people with the agreed role. Keep the training record and contact list separate from the accessory order.
  2. Check your ID setup. Measure the cards and confirm the holder orientation, clip compatibility and any workplace restrictions on neck-worn items.
  3. Try a sample. Check text visibility, fit and how the ID sits before committing to a large order. Follow the supplier’s instructions for inspecting release fittings.
  4. Approve custom artwork. Check spelling, logos and the printed role title. Do not add a provider’s branding without permission.
  5. Compare the complete cost. Look at pack quantities, VAT, delivery, holders and artwork charges. A low unit price may not reflect the whole order.
  6. Plan how you will issue them. Explain when the lanyard should be worn, how colleagues can contact the team and what to do when someone leaves the role.

Put the training behind the role

Our Level 3 Mental Health First Aid course is delivered live online with an instructor, with a maximum of eight learners on public courses. It includes discussion and practical scenarios, with a Qualsafe Level 3 qualification following successful assessment.

Check the syllabus and entry requirements against your intended role before booking. A lanyard can then support your workplace’s identification arrangements.

Questions about mental health first aid lanyards

Does a lanyard prove someone is qualified?

No. A printed strap is identification, not a training certificate. Verify the person’s qualification or training and their agreed workplace role separately.

Do I need a breakaway lanyard?

Check your employer’s equipment requirements and the tasks involved. A breakaway is designed as a release point in the strap, but some work may call for a different way to display identification altogether.

Is an ID card holder included?

Not necessarily. Some listings sell only the strap and clip. Check the contents of the pack and the holder’s dimensions before ordering.

Does the lanyard have to be green?

Choose the colour and wording approved for your workplace. Suppliers offer different colours; colour alone should not be used to decide whether someone is trained or available to help.

Can I wear a general awareness lanyard without first-aid training?

An awareness message is different from a trained-role title. Make that distinction clear and avoid presenting yourself as a designated first aider if that is not your role.
