Can you study mental health first aid for free?
Free learning and funded courses are available, but they do not all lead to the same outcome. Some providers offer eligible adults a funded Level 2 qualification. Others offer introductory awareness training, a participation record or free study with an optional paid certificate.
The useful question is what you need the course to do: build your understanding, achieve a named qualification, or prepare you for a designated workplace mental health first-aider role.
Check the outcome before the price. A course with “mental health first aid” in its title is not automatically a workplace first-aider qualification. Free tuition also does not always mean a free certificate.
Compare free and funded options
These are different types of learning, rather than a ranking of interchangeable courses. The provider notes below explain the checks that matter.

Free Courses in England
Mental Health First Aid & Mental Health Advocacy in the Workplace
The provider advertises an online Level 2 course that may be fully funded through the Adult Skills Fund. Its published offer includes a certificate on completion, with TQUK or NCFE as the awarding organisation depending on location.
Who can apply: eligibility depends on living in England, the provider’s age cutoff, qualifying residency or immigration status and other funding conditions. Complete its current eligibility assessment before treating the place as funded.
Study time: the advertised timetable is 6–12 weeks, with 5–10 hours of study recommended each week.
Before enrolling: obtain the full qualification title and number. Use those details to check what the qualification covers and whether it meets your intended role.
The AIM Group
Mental Health First Aid and Mental Health Advocacy in the Workplace
The AIM Group advertises a free Level 2 route covering mental health awareness, support and advocacy. Funding is subject to eligibility and postcode checks.
Who can apply: check the provider’s current age, residency and concurrent-study conditions. The qualification’s entry requirements and the conditions for receiving funding are separate questions.
Before enrolling: confirm the awarding organisation, assessment requirements, study timetable, certificate arrangements and any charges for withdrawing or not completing.
MHFA England: Mental Health Aware
Sponsored introductory training for smaller organisations
MHFA England and Simplyhealth advertise free places on a four-hour Mental Health Aware course for organisations with 250 employees or fewer. Delivery is instructor-led, online or face to face.
What you receive: a certificate of attendance, a manual and a workbook. This is an awareness introduction, not the full Mental Health First Aid course.
Before booking: confirm that sponsored places remain available and that your organisation meets the programme’s conditions.
The Open University: OpenLearn
Making sense of mental health problems
This free, ten-hour course explores medical, psychological and social perspectives on mental health problems. You can study at your own pace and start reading without creating an account.
What you receive: a free Statement of Participation when you sign in, enrol and complete the course.
Choose this for: developing your understanding at your own pace. A participation statement is not evidence that you have qualified for a workplace first-aider role.
Alison
Free study with optional paid certificates
Alison offers a catalogue of mental health learning. Check the particular course’s content and assessment requirements; the platform name alone does not tell you which role the course prepares you for.
Certificate costs: Alison says learning and course completion are free. Digital and printed certificates are optional purchases, while a Learner Record is available free.
Before enrolling: check the current course page and certificate price. Do not assume a completion certificate is a regulated qualification or a workplace first-aider award.
What does the certificate actually mean?
Participation or attendance
A record that you took part in or completed particular learning. Check whether any assessment was involved and what the record says.
A named qualification
Look for the awarding organisation, full title and qualification number. Read the purpose and learning outcomes rather than relying on the word “accredited”.
A workplace first-aider role
Confirm that the specific course prepares you for the role your organisation needs. A price, level number or similar-sounding title does not establish equivalence.
An important Level 2 distinction
The NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Mental Health First Aid and Mental Health Advocacy in the Workplace, qualification 603/5148/2, is knowledge-only. NCFE’s published tutor guidance states that this qualification does not qualify learners to carry out the designated workplace Mental Health First Aider role.
That statement applies to this named qualification. It should not be generalised to every Level 2 course. Ask the provider which award you will receive and check it against your employer’s requirements.
Training can develop understanding and initial support skills. It does not make a learner a mental health clinician or guarantee that they can manage every crisis.
Who is eligible for a funded course?
There is no single eligibility test covering every free mental health course in the UK. England’s Adult Skills Fund has its own rules, and devolved authority areas within England can have different arrangements. A provider needs to assess the course, your circumstances and the funding available.
Your location
Check the country and postcode covered by the offer. An England-funded listing should not be assumed to cover Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
Age and residency
Ask which age cutoff and residency or immigration conditions apply to that intake. A qualification may have a different minimum entry age from its funded offer.
Previous and current study
Disclose relevant qualifications and any other funded course you are taking. Ask whether prior learning or overlapping enrolment affects eligibility.
Funding and provider terms
Employment, income or benefit circumstances may matter for some offers. Confirm the terms with the provider instead of applying one national income threshold to every course.
If you live outside England, check the provider’s geographical rules before applying. Free introductory learning may still be useful, but it should be assessed separately from an England-funded qualification.
Seven questions to ask before you enrol
- What is the exact course and qualification? Ask for the full title, awarding organisation and qualification number, if applicable.
- Does it prepare me for the role I need? Confirm the learning outcomes with the provider and any employer requesting the training.
- Am I eligible for the advertised funding? Check your postcode, age, residency, prior study and other applicable conditions.
- What does “free” include? Ask about tuition, assessment, certificates, materials and any optional purchases.
- What happens if I withdraw or miss a deadline? Read the enrolment terms before accepting a funded place.
- How will I learn and be assessed? Confirm the timetable, weekly commitment, support available and any live attendance requirements.
- What evidence will I receive? Check the completion requirements and exactly what will appear on your certificate or learning record.
A free course is not always the best fit
Free learning can be a useful starting point. But if you need a particular qualification, live practice or the opportunity to ask an instructor questions, choosing on price alone could leave you with a course that does not meet your needs. Paying for a course does not automatically make it better either: the right choice depends on the outcome, support and learning format.

Questions about free mental health courses
Can I get a free mental health course with a certificate?
Some funded courses include a certificate once you complete the required work. Other platforms charge separately for an optional certificate, even when the study is free. Compare the whole offer rather than the headline price.
Are online courses available for free?
Yes. The examples above include funded online study and free self-paced learning. Check whether “online” means independent study, scheduled sessions with an instructor, or a mixture of both.
Will a free course make me a mental health first aider?
It depends on the specific course and award. Introductory learning and a participation record should not be treated as a first-aider qualification. The named NCFE qualification discussed above expressly excludes that designated workplace role; check other awards on their own terms.
Are these all MHFA England courses?
No. MHFA England is one provider. A Level 2 mental health advocacy qualification, an OpenLearn course and a platform completion certificate are different offers. Check the provider and full course title.
